Drawings

Shuvaprasanna experiments with is drawing, which he uses as a therapeutic device as well as an exercise in improvement. Through drawing he can not only take visual notes but also develop his vocabulary of motifs and visual idioms. The transition from the fine lines of drawing to etching and cutting surfaces in printmaking is a logical progression. Shuva chose to follow his instinct and joined the Indian College of Art and Draftsmanship, Rabindra Bharati University.

His infuriated father turned Shuva out of the house, forcing him to stay with his sister and her family for some years. Fending for himself and earning a little by drawing portraits, especially during festivals and fairs, he carried on with his art college studies. But the intellectual rigour was sadly missing, and the future looked bleak with hardly any prospects for professional artists no money, no work and no recognition. The student artist, given his fortitude and talent in drawing and illustration, managed to earn with odd commissions for portraiture and design work for newspapers that fetched him ten to fifteen rupees per assignment but which were paid much later.
